Content powered by NovaFantasySports.com Vontae Davis rookie season as a
professional NFL athlete comes to an end this Sunday when the Miami
Dolphins
(7-8) host the Pittsburgh Steelers (8-7) in week 17 of the 2009 season.
There
will not be postseason football for the Dolphins this year though,
regardless
of the outcome.
Who is Vontae Davis? Well, most of you already know that he is the younger brother of San Franciscos star tight end Vernon Davis.
In the 2009 NFL draft Vontae Davis was chosen as the 25th overall pick, and the 2nd at defensive back. He was drafted out of Illinois where he had an illustrious career with the Fighting Illini.
In 2006 he was named to Freshman All-America first teams by The Sporting News, Scout.com and Rivals.com, and the teams Rookie of the Year.
In 2007 he started all 12 games for the Fighting Illini, 13 if you include the Rose Bowl, and was named first-team All Big Ten by Rivals.com.
He posted a career-best and team-leading 13 tackles in the Rose Bowl where they lost 17-49 to the USC Trojans.
In 2008 Vontae Davis earned unanimous first-team All Big Ten honours by the coaches as well as the media.
After his junior season Vontae Davis decided not to return for a 4th year at college and became eligible for the 2009 NFL draft.
Vontae Davis had to adjust fast to the professional game. Will Allen, one of the starting cornerbacks, got injured after 6 games and Vontae Davis became the starting cornerback from there on until the end of the season.
Going into Week 17, Vontae Davis had a team-leading 4 interceptions and returned one of them for a touchdown.
In my next article I will
review his rookie
season for the Miami Dolphins. Make sure to check back.
