“Playing corner, if you ain’t got that confidence, you shouldn’t be out there,” Davis said told the Sun Sentinel after Tuesday’s practice. “That’s just part of it. Good corners who become great have a lot of confidence. Always had that, that I wanted to be the best at what I did.”
Miami drafted Davis and Smith in the 1st and 2nd round, respectively, of the 2009 NFL Draft and both CBs played in all of the Dolphins 16 games last year. Smith, an All-MWC player in his senior year at Utah, started all 16 games and finished the season with 32 tackles and 12 passes defended, but publicly vented frustration that he did not notch a single INT.
“It took a while for me to get over it, but it’s last year, I’m not going to worry about it,” Smith said. “That whole season is put in the past.”
The two corners have often been likened to Miami’s excellent tandem of Patrick Surtain and Sam Madison, who terrorized receivers from 1998 to 2004. Smith called the comparisons “real big shoes,” but added that coming into the league with Davis have helped the duo shoulder the big expectations.
“Fortunately Vontae and I came at the same time, so we were going through the same experiences, and could pick each other up,” he said adding encouragement from veterans such as Will Allen or Jason Taylor last year also aided his growth. “From there, it was full steam ahead.”
The biggest challenge for Tony Sparano in handling Davis and Smith is dealing with their two distinctly different personality types. Davis, who finished last season with 47 tackles and 4 INTs, is more outspoken, often yelling out, “Von-tae!” during practice and requires a regular reeling-in from teammates. Smith is more quiet and introverted, needing a calm conversation with coaches to figure out his role on the field.
“I think, from my end, one of the two guys you could get after, and one of the two guys maybe you have to put your arm around a little bit to make your point one way or the other,” Sparano said. “I think as long as you get your point across and they understand it. I had a conversation with Sean out here [Monday], and I think he understood what I was saying.”
The Dolphins will host the Falcons in Miami on Friday.
